Cambridge & Ely

Smaller and more compact than Oxford, Cambridge is a cultured pearl in a rich agricultural sea. A sea that changes with the seasons. Set on a river bend, Cambridge has kept its rural feel with cattle grazing within 500 yards of the market square. The extraordinary Fens lie under huge skies with the Cathedral at Ely rising up in this flat marshland like a great ship. This is a day to inspire the soul to leap to the rafters.

Cambridge & Ely

It is against the law to play tennis in the streets on Cambridge

Our Guide will be waiting for you on the outskirts of Cambridge at 10-15/10-30am for morning refreshments (not included in tour price). For a comprehensive introduction and to save on the feet we’ll take you on a one hour panoramic coach tour of Cambridge. There will be a stop at the American Military Cemetery – a tranquil place with landscaped gardens, a chapel and a mural map of the war in Europe.

To see the heart of Cambridge you need to be on foot so next we’ll take you on a short and entertaining walk to see some of the University colleges, the Senate House and the mediaeval open air market.

Our lunch stop today will be in Cambridge. If you bring a packed lunch you’ll have time to stroll along the Backs and watch the art of punting on the Cam or visit Kings College Chapel (admission charge not included in tour fee).

In the afternoon, we drive across Fenland to visit Ely, one of the smallest of the English Cathedral towns. The highlight this afternoon is a guided tour of the Cathedral, admission is included in the tour price. To stand inside the Galilee Porch and look into the nave is to be filled with an abiding wonder, a spine tingling mixture of pride and joy. Of such moments, a celebration of the Millennium is made.

There is an excellent Cathedral shop and a refectory where you can buy tea before leaving for home at 4-45pm.
