The City is a fascinating blend of old and new |
Romans, plague, fire, Wren, Blitz and throughout all, trade. Our itinerary is designed to get right to the heart of the Square Mile.
Our expert and entertaining Guide will meet you on Tooley Street, near London Bridge, at 10-30am to begin the day with morning refreshments at a Thames pub. From the riverside our Guide can define the geographic limits of the Square Mile and begin the tale of 2000 years. During the morning our coach tour reveals the variety and rich story of the City and includes St. Paul’s, the Lloyds building, the Stock Exchange, the Roman City Walls and the four City Bridges. We conclude our morning with a short foray on foot to see the newly developed Paternoster Square in the precincts of St. Paul’s Cathedral where an old City gate has been erected more than a century after it was removed from it’s original location in Fleet Street.
After lunch we focus on Guildhall, the civic and ceremonial heart of the City of London. In the awe inspiring mediaeval hall (a working building, so an internal visit is subject to access on the day) we explain the unique City government and trace the origins of the Livery Companies and world famous Mayoralty. We’ll reveal ancient customs and traditions and tell tales of state banquets and the trials of traitors and of the hapless scapegoats of our ancestors’ conspiracies – including poor Lady Jane Grey.
To round off a great day out we visit the new Guildhall Art Gallery focusing on London’s landscape and people over the past 500 years. Your Guide will entertain you with a “faces and places” talk to help you make the most of your visit. A short walk leads us to the Museum of London where we can buy tea before heading home at 4-45pm.
If you have booked a tour of the Mansion House we can tailor our day to include your one-hour visit. If you are interested in booking a trip to Mansion House please call us and we’ll tell you what you need to do.
A mixture of coach sightseeing and short strolls broken by opportunities to sit down makes this an accessible day for all walking abilities.
This tour is available every day of the year.
